5 years of images | Horse & Dog photography

I was fortunate enough to be able to take a vacation over the past couple of weeks to catch up on many things - like revisiting some aspects of my photography business, spending time with Poppy and generally just recouperating from a busy 2010. 

Another thing I found time for was going back through my archives and pulling together just over 90 of my favourite images from the past 5 years.  It was tough narrowing down the images, so the way I did it was to include images that stick out in my mind, as well as those that have been favourites from my fans.    Overally, I found the process really energizing, and it got my creative mind working a bit.  Hopefully the next 5 years will bring even more images like these.

Farewell Seuss | Horse photography

After much soul searching, I decided it was time to retire Seuss from jumping.  He is a horse with a ton of heart and personality so it wasn't an easy farewell.  He's also been my friend for more than 6 years.  Thanks to some help from some very amazing horse people, Seuss found a perfect new home where he's just going to be a horse.

I spent his last night at Parish with a camera in hand and we spent time playing and saying goodbye.  Here are some of my favourite photos of him from that night.  I think they really capture him.

A Session with Seuss | Horse Photography

Life has kind of gotten in the way of my "Session with Seuss" photobook but I have made some progress.  I've decided to add in some stories along with the photos.  Seuss is such a character that I think he's the horse version of Marley so I think this project just might be a neat way to capture a little bit about the life of Seuss.

I'll have to keep you in suspense as to what the words say.  Once I get the album done, I will post it in a readable format.  Stay tuned!

Woof Report & first aid tips for dog owners

I recently came across the daily e-newsletter, the Woof Report, which, if you have dogs in your life, will definitely be a welcome addition to your inbox.  It's similar to the Daily Candy e-newsletter.

Today's issue was about being prepared for dog first aid situations.  There's some great resources listed here, so do yourself a favour and read-up.  Your pets will thank you!

In the meantime, here's a photo of one of my favourite senior dogs.  This is Bonnie, aka Bing Bong.  She's one of the dogs at the barn where Seuss lives and is perhaps one of the sweetest ladies you'll ever meet.  I think Seuss just might have a crush on her.  She's not so receptive to his kisses though.  It's kind of a one-way love I guess.

Seuss - after the bath

As promised, here's a series of images of Seuss right after his first bath of spring.  Clearly, cleanliness is not important to him.  At least he had fun.

I am also in the process of doing another photobook.  This time, Seuss will be the subject since he's been so neglected photographically.  So here's just the first of (hopefully) a bunch of spreads from the book.  It's already well underway but I don't want to give away too much just yet so you'll just have to hang tight.

Parker and the red ball

I had bought this big red jolly ball for Seuss back at Christmas in hopes that it might distract him from eating his blankets and taking off his halter and swinging it around his stall.  It didn't work.  He just destroyed the ball by ripping out the rope that went through the middle of it.  So I decided to give the ball to Parker - who could use an outlet for his energy. 

Well, Parker absolutely loved the red ball.  Maybe because it had a very distinct aroma of horse poo from spending 3 months in Seuss' stall.  Nevertheless, I got some fun shots of Parker playing with it.  Here are a few put together in a storyboard format.

Here are a few more shots of the dog I think should have been called Radar because of his great big ears.  Parker is actually a german shepherd/black lab cross - though it doesn't look like he has any lab in him.

And a pic I managed to sneak in of my brother and his girlfriend.  Cute.

Find Seuss

I just adore this image.  The little boy actually has an apple in his hand that he's waiting to feed the horse who is standing in the doorway.

Seuss is in the paddock in the background.  I didn't actually realize he was out there when I was taking the image so it was funny to see him there when I started editing the photos.

Seuss meets Murphy

I think I have had Seuss for about 6 years now.  Murphy has been around for 11 or so.  They never met.  So last weekend my mom brought Murphy up to the barn for a nice fall walk and to meet Seuss.  Seuss loves dogs so no issue there.   Murphy on the other hand had no idea what to make of it all.  He's a bit of a suck at the best of times, but particularly sucky when he's nervous.

Here's the closest Murphy let Seuss get...you can tell by Murphy's expression he would have run away if he weren't on his leash.
